History

The North Carolina state-approved Geriatric Aide training program was developed as a career advancement opportunity for Nurse Aides.

The training program was established in response to the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (IOM) Long-Term Care Task Force. The task force report, A Long-Term Care Plan for North Carolina: Final Report (January 2001), is available at the North Carolina IOM.

The task force included members of the North Carolina General Assembly; representatives of county commissions and local governments; long-term care providers and industry associations; consumer advocacy groups; business representatives; educators and researchers; and DHHS agency leaders responsible for overseeing long-term care services for older adults or people with disabilities.

The North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation, in partnership with the North Carolina Board of Nursing, the North Carolina Community College System, and other stakeholders, developed the training program.

The training program builds upon Nurse Aide I curriculum knowledge and covers topics such as dementia and challenging behaviors, mental health concerns, and end-of-life care. Geriatric Aides also learn self-care and ways to manage stress.
