Eligibility and Testing Timeline
Below are the timelines for taking the state-approved Nurse Aide examination based on eligibility requirements:
- E1 and E3
Candidates should seek approval from the training program to complete the exam. Candidates must
pass both the written and the skills examination within two (2) years from the successful completion date of a
state-approved training program or within three (3) attempts, whichever comes first, to be placed on the North
Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
- E5
Candidates should seek approval from the school of nursing to complete the exam. Candidates must pass
both the written and the skills exam within two (2) years from the successful completion date of coursework
equivalent to state-approved nurse aide training or within three (3) attempts, whichever comes first, to be
placed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
- E8
Candidates should seek approval from the Division of Health Service Regulation by completing a
training waiver. Candidates must pass both the written and the skills exam within two (2) years of the
application approval date or within three (3) attempts, whichever comes first, to be placed on the North
Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
- E9
Candidates should seek approval from the Division of Health Service Regulation by completing a
training waiver. Candidates must pass both the written and the skills exam within two (2) years from the
successful completion date of a state-approved training program or within three (3) attempts, whichever comes
first, to be placed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.
- E10
Candidates should seek approval from the Division of Health Service Regulation by completing a
training waiver. Candidates may apply to take the state-approved nurse aide competency exam within 90 days prior
to their North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry listing expiration date. Candidates have three (3) attempts to
pass both the written and the skills exam before their listing expiration date.
